Richmond Suburban Ladies Tennis League
Here at promoteRVAtennis.org we love telling you about what is happening in the RVA tennis community and on weekday mornings it’s the Suburban Ladies Tennis League.
About 60 years ago there was talk among a group of ladies about forming a social tennis league. They thought it would be enjoyable to bring different parts of the tennis community together for some FUN tennis and they were correct. Beginning with small recreation associations with mostly young stay at home moms, the league started with some simple guidelines. The timing of matches was set during the school year so women could send their children off to school, play tennis, enjoy post match social time and still be home before the kids returned home from school. Over the years the league has grown substantially, but the motto to foster friendly tennis competition in the RVA area remains its #1 goal.
On weekday mornings in the spring and fall you will find area tennis courts filled with ladies laughing, lobbying and loving life as their team battles. With the growth over the years, most recreation associations, country clubs and home-owner associations have teams. The teams are from the City of Richmond, and the counties of Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico.
The volunteer organization includes league coordinators, website administrators, section representatives, club coordinators and team captains. The league has 4 divisions with 6 levels per division, 6-8 teams per level and 8-12 players per team. Do the math, about 1500+ ladies playing tennis each week around RVA.! ! And that is just the tennis part of the league.
The many ways the ladies are connected is fun as well. They went to school together, they are related, they do business with each other as the league has doctors, lawyers, graphic designers, business owners, other professionals, all very interesting people.
Players plan their work schedules around their ‘suburban days’ whenever possible so they can participate. They play to win, improve their game, play for the physical activity, but always for fun. MANY play just to go to lunch with the team after the match.
An annual awards luncheon is held after the spring season to celebrate the results, our comradery and even support other worthy philanthropic causes, like breast cancer awareness. Guest speakers, games, door prizes, a fashion show and silent auctions are all part of the celebration. If you would like to learn more go to www.RSLTL.com.

I can’t be everywhere at once, since I play in several leagues, so let’s team up and get the word out about all things tennis in RVA. Don’t be shy!
See you around the courts !
